Role(s)

Seminary period trustee

William Halderman served briefly as a trustee of Shimer College during the early Seminary period. He was the brother of trustee Nathaniel Halderman, whom he followed to Illinois and the milling business. He worked for a time in Mount Carroll, running the mill store at Stag Point, but sold his interests there by 1857 to invest in the Stone Steam Flour Mill in Freeport.[1]

As with most of the early trustees, the exact dates of his service are uncertain. William is among the trustees whose name was subscribed to a resolution published in April 1854, but he does not appear in any extant lists of trustees from 1853 or 1855.

On September 15, 1847, William married Anna Hostetter, the sister of John L. and Abraham Hostetter; after William's death in 1866, she married state legislator John Huy Addams, thus becoming the stepmother of Jane Addams.
