The University of Chicago is the institution from which Shimer College inherited its unique Great Books curriculum, the brainchild of U of C president Robert Maynard Hutchins. Many Shimer faculty have been either U of C graduates or former faculty there.

Under its first president, William Rainey Harper, the U of C was also the source of the junior college concept which Shimer embraced during its earlier Academy period. During the Academy period, Shimer actually bore the official name "Frances Shimer Academy of the University of Chicago."
