Steam plant

The two boilers shown were not the ones in the mid 60s.

Erected in 1911 the plant provided steam for heat and hot water for the main campus through at least 1978.

The boilers shown as original in the picture were replaced at some point with significantly larger ones, neither quite able to heat the entire plant during the day.

In early 1966 one of these boilers failed making for a very cold winter. It was replaced with a gas fired boiler which could handle the entire campus by itself, the coal burning one being brought up date and held in resevre.

The upper floor as shown, held a laundry and until Spring 65 when it was closed at the end of the term, Weekly bed linens were part of the room bill. The laundry did clothing as well, but that was charged for.
