The Seminary period in the history of Shimer College runs from the school's foundation in 1853 to 1896, when ownership was transferred from Frances Shimer to a Board of Trustees. During this period the school was known as the Mount Carroll Seminary, or sometimes the Mount Carroll Seminary and Conservatory of Music.
