Sarah Hostetter was a graduate of Shimer College during the Seminary period and a teacher there during the Academy period. She was also the traveling companion of her cousin Jane Addams during Addams' formative trip to Europe.

Upon the death of her parents Abraham and Catherine in 1872, she was sent to the New Church School in Waltham, MA for two years together with her sister Susan; both subsequently attended the Mount Carroll Seminary.[1] Sarah graduated in 1878.[2]

Hostetter founded the domestic science program at the Seminary around 1901.[3]
