Robert A. Mandel was a student at Shimer College, graduating in 1973. As of 2011, he is a judge on the 7th Circuit of South Dakota.

Mandel worked as a county judge in North Dakota's Mercer County from 1979 to 1982, and concurrently from 1980 to 1982 as a judge at the Fort Berthold Tribal Court. From 1983 to 2011, he worked at the US Attorney's office in Rapid City, South Dakota, retiring as a supervisory assistant US Attorney.

    “I don’t know that there’s ever been a more consummate expert of rules of evidence ever elevated to the bench than Bob Mandel,” Duffy said.
    Mandel experiences as judge, and later as a prosecutor, have given him a broad background not only in criminal law but family law.
    “I’ve done it all. There’s nothing I haven’t been exposed to over my years in practice,” he said. “The best quality that I bring to this is that I listen.”
