Philo M. Jewell was a student at Shimer College in the Seminary period, starting in 1866. He later became a physician and state legislator in Iowa.

    State Senator Philo M. Jewell, after a long illness of a year or more died on Thursday, Jan. 8th, at his home in Decorah.
    Senator Jewell was 66 years old. He was born in Mount Vernon, Knox county, Ohio, Jan. 1, 1848. His parents moved in 1866 to Carroll county, Ill., where his early days were spent on a farm. He attended school at Mount Carroll seminary and in 1870 entered the medical college of Michigan university. He was graduated in 1873.
    As a physician and surgeon Dr. Jewell practiced first for six years in Whiteside county, Ill., and then moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa. He was married to Nama Livingston in 1875.
    Dr. Jewell's political career began when be was chosen a member of the United States pension board in Winneshiek county in 1897. In 1899 he was elected coroner of the/ county and filled that office until 1903. He was made a member of the state bouse of representatives in 1906 in which capacity he served two terms. In 1910 he was elected senator for the Forty-second district, composed of Winneshiek and Howard counties and continued to hold the honor to the time of his death.
