Nellie Rinewalt, née Nellie Shirk, was a student at Shimer College in the Seminary period, graduating in 1876. She was the niece of local grain magnate Jesse Shirk, becoming his ward after her father's death in 1875.
She married John M. Rinewalt in 1879. Both she and her husband remained closely involved in Shimer affairs throughout their lives.
