Mary Clare Sherwood was an instructor in art and assistant in instrumental music at Shimer College, then known first as the Mount Carroll Seminary and later as the Frances Shimer Academy of the University of Chicago, beginning in 1894. She had previously taught at Schuylkill Seminary 1892-1893, and St. Mary's School in Knoxville, Illinois, 1893-1894.

Sherwood received musical instruction from W.H. Sherwood of Chicago, and artistic instruction at the Art Institute of Boston and the Students' Art League of New York.
