Mary E. White was a student at Shimer College during the early Seminary period. She was one of the school's first eleven pupils on May 11, 1853. She was the daughter of John White of Mount Carroll.
She graduated from the Mount Carroll Seminary in 1862 with the degree of Laureate of Arts. After graduating, she taught oil painting and penciling at the Seminary.
