Margaretta Ophelia Mason was a member of the faculty of Shimer College during the Seminary period, serving as principal of the music department. She died on January 3, 1871, of tuberculosis.
Mason had been adopted as a daughter by Mrs. Shimer, and was buried in the Shimer plot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll on January 6, 1871.
