Fortieth Annual Reunion of the Alumni at the World's Fair[]

CHICAGO, June 24.—To the Editor.—One of the most enjoyable gatherings yet held upon the World's Fair grounds, for those who participated, was the fortieth reunion of the alumni of the Mount Carroll, Ill., seminary, held in the Illinois building last Thursday, June 22. Over one hundred of the alumni and former teachers were present, coming from nearly every State in the Union, from Washington on the West to Maine on the East It was a touching and worthy tribute to a noble woman, Mrs. F.A.W. Shriner, the principal of the school and a pioneer teacher to whom Northern Illinois is more deeply indebted for the higher education of teachers than to any other one person, that so many should leave the thousands of attractions of the White City and devote one-half a day to paying their respects to a public benefactor, and in reviving old reminiscences. It was a beautiful illustration of the power of what Drummond calls the greatest thing in the world; a power more subtle than electricity, more to be desired than fine gold, more beautiful than jewels and precious stones; the soul of art, that without which the World's Fair with all its beauty and magnificence and grandeur would be but a fleeting show—love—have manifested in friendships, and a desire for all that builds up and helps our fellowmen. That many other such reunions may be held during the World's Fair is the wish of your correspondent.
