Harriet Gertrude Blaine taught Latin and Greek at Shimer College, then known as the Frances Shimer Academy of the University of Chicago, beginning in 1896. She also served as Lady Principal.
Blaine worked as a schoolteacher in Elyria, Ohio from 1879 to 1886, when she enrolled at Oberlin College, receiving her A.B. in 1890. She subsequently worked in the Oberlin library as Cataloguer and then Head Cataloguer until 1893, also beginning to teach Latin in 1892. In 1893, she enrolled in graduate study in Greek, Latin and Classical Archaeology at the University of Chicago, receiving her A.M. in 1896.
