Born in Washington County, Virginia, Moffett married Mary Jane Beaty Davis there in 1831.[1] They moved to Indiana the same year, moving on to Cherry Grove in 1836.

Moffett was one of the founding elders of the Church of Christ in Cherry Grove in 1843.[2] He served for a time as Carroll County superintendent of schools, in addition to other offices. He chaired the founding meeting of the Carroll County Agricultural Society in 1853,[3] and one of the first county commissioners.

His wife was a woman of sterling virtues and of devoted religious character—a mother in Israel—whose influence and example left an abiding impression upon the church and community.
