Eva Slocum, née Eva Hartman, was a student at Shimer College in the Seminary period, graduating in 1874. She and her husband, Charles Edwin Slocum, both died in 1884, leaving four young children.

    George was born September 15, 1877 in Forreston, Illinois, son of Charles Edwin Slocum and Eva F. (Hartman) Slocum. After the death of both his parents in 1883, George along with a younger brother were brought to Hood River, Oregon to live with their aunt Georgiana (Slocum) Smith and her husband Ezra L. Smith.
