Effie Speer, née Effie Hallett, was a student at Shimer College in the Seminary period, graduating in 1894. She was the daughter of James Hallett and Amanda Lindsay Hallett, who adopted her in 1869.[1][2]

She was living in Mount Carroll in 1900.[3] After her (adoptive) mother's death in 1905,[4] it appears that she traveled west; she is listed in Spade, Nebraska in the 1909 and 1910 Annual Calendars, still under the name of Hallett. The 1911 Calendar is the first to show her under the name of Speer, in Strasburger, Nebraska. (Both of these locations appear to have been ranches rather than towns.)
