David Koukal was a student at Shimer College in the early Waukegan period, graduating in 1990. A native of Waukegan, he attended through the weekend program, and also attended the Oxford program.[1]

Koukal's senior thesis at Shimer was titled "A Philosophy of Dialogue".[2] He continued the study of philosophy at the graduate level at Duquesne University, where his 1999 doctoral dissertation bore the title "The Question of Expression: Toward a Phenomenological Rhetoric."

Since 2000, Koukal has been a member of the faculty at University of Detroit Mercy, where he served from 2001 to 2011 as director of the Honors Program.[2]
