The Chicago campus of Shimer College is shared with the Illinois Institute of Technology. The spaces dedicated to Shimer are located on the first and second floors of 3424 S. State St., which is connected by covered walkways to the other two buildings of the Institute of Gas Technology complex (3410 and 3440 S. State), and to the IIT Tower.

Getting to ShimerEdit

Shimer is located at 3424 S. State St., in Chicago. By car, it is within blocks of both the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and Lake Shore Drive (US 41). The campus is also directly across the street from the 35th Street Station on the CTA Green Line, and about two blocks from the 35th Street Station on the CTA Red Line.

The Shimer building is also about a block from the new 35th Street Station on the Metra Rock Island Line. The Rock Island trains run north to LaSalle Street Station and southwest to Beverly, Morgan Park, Blue Island, Midlothian, Oak Forest, Tinley Park, Mokena, New Lenox, and Joliet (PDF schedule).

Finding an entranceEdit

Getting in the door can be a challenge for alumni and others who are not members of the internal community. People entering the building must sign in and show ID at the security desk; as a consequence, any entrance without security personnel present is generally locked.

During normal weekday business hours, it is usually possible to enter through the State Street entrance, where a small Shimer College sign can be found. For lectures, Assemblies, and other gatherings taking place on the weekend or evening, it is generally necessary to enter through the IIT Tower at 35th & State. After signing in, proceed north through the maze (you may wish to bring a compass), and once you reach an area with arrows pointing to Shimer, take the stairs or elevator to the second floor.

Certain Shimer events, such as Commencement, are held not in the Shimer building, but in the Atrium, a building directly west of the Shimer building, at 10 W 35th Street.
