Dr. Benjamin P. Miller was one of the founding Trustees of Shimer College, at the dawn of the Seminary period in 1852. He was born in Kentucky in 1820.
According to the 1878 city directory, Miller received his MD in 1844 in Chicago.[1] This would indicate that he must have studied at Rush Medical College, established in 1843.[2]
At the organizing meeting of the Carroll County Medical Society in 1868, he delivered a paper titled "On Fractures in General, both Compound and Simple."[3]

Then one McGee, a brother of Mrs. O’Neal, took ill and died; then a son, Lewis O’Neal, took ill and died, all within a week. They were buried on the farm, Calvin Gray preaching the funeral sermons.
- in "Log Cabin Days", Ellen Eliza Preston Downing, a. 1920, retrieved 2011-01-12:
- This locality was fortunate to have for forty years or more a competent surgeon Dr. B. P. Miller. Broken bones under his ministration were made as good as new. He frequently had the task of breaking over the results of the malpractice of other surgeons. No x-ray or plaster of Paris casts to assist him. He was very efficient in other lines of surgery.
